Back-to-school means new schedules, packed lunches, sports, homework, and busy mornings. With all that change, brushing, flossing, and healthy snack habits can easily get disrupted.
The good news? A few simple routines can help keep your child’s smile healthy all school year.
1. Rushed Mornings = Rushed Brushing
When everyone is trying to get out the door, brushing can become a quick swipe or get skipped altogether.
Our tip: Move brushing earlier in the morning routine instead of saving it for the last minute. Aim for two minutes of thorough brushing with fluoride toothpaste.
2. School Changes Snacking Habits
How often kids snack matters for cavity risk. Frequent snacking means teeth are exposed to acids and sugars more often.
Whenever possible, stick with structured meals and snacks, and make water the go-to drink throughout the school day.
3. Cafeteria Choices Matter
School can introduce flavored drinks, sports drinks, juice, sticky snacks, and sweet treats.
You don’t have to eliminate every fun food. Focus on balance and frequency:
- Choose water when possible.
- Pair carbohydrates with protein or other filling foods.
- Keep sticky or sugary foods with meals when possible.
- Rinse with water after eating when brushing isn’t practical.
4. Fall Sports Bring Dental Injuries
Soccer, football, field hockey, basketball, and other activities can put teeth at risk.
If your child plays a sport with a risk of falls or contact, ask us whether a properly fitted mouthguard would be beneficial. If a dental injury happens, contact your child’s dentist promptly so we can guide you on the next steps.
5. Busy Evenings Can Push Brushing Aside
Sports, dance, homework, dinner… and suddenly it’s bedtime.
Keep nighttime care simple and predictable:
Dinner → pajamas → brush → floss → bed
Making oral hygiene part of the routine before everyone is exhausted can make it much easier to stay consistent.
Why Do the First 30 Days Matter?
One missed brushing isn’t the problem. It’s when small changes become everyday habits: more frequent snacking, sugary drinks, rushed brushing, skipped flossing, or forgetting the mouthguard.
Those little habits can add up over time.
Start the School Year With a Smile Check
As your family settles into its new routine, ask:
Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste?
Flossing regularly?
Choosing water throughout the day?
Mouthguard ready for sports?
Up to date on dental visits?
Healthy smiles aren’t built through perfect routines. They’re built through small, consistent habits.
And if back-to-school threw your routine completely off? September is a great time to reset!
Here’s to a happy, healthy school year and lots of reasons to smile! 🩵
